Multinational video hosting service Vevo has launched an investigation into a cyber incident, during which unknown hackers seized control of the accounts of several famous artists on YouTube.
“Some videos were directly uploaded to a small number of Vevo artist channels by a previously unauthorized source. All incorrectly uploaded videos have been deleted by Vevo. Although the artists’ channels were protected and the incident was resolved, as a best practice, Vevo will check our security systems,” a Vevo representative told The Record resource.
Earlier, YouTube users received notifications from their favorite artists about new videos. The uploaded videos were shot by other artists, including a popular gamer and musician named IShowSpeed. Some of the video titles contained the phrase “HACKED BY @LOSPELAOSBRO” (“hacked BY @LOSPELAOSBRO”).
The hacked pages belonged to Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, Travis Scott, The Weeknd and Lil Nas X.
A Twitter user under the pseudonym @lospelaosbro took responsibility for hacking the “star” YouTube channels and arranged a survey on whom to hack next. It is not known who @lospelaosbro is, but the photos he published show the Spanish criminal Paco Sanz. The @lospelaosbro account was created only in April 2022, but more than 15 thousand people have already subscribed to it.
The prankster started a survey among Twitter users and suggested choosing the next target for hacking. The choice of users fell on the pages of artists such as Playboi Carti, Daddy Yankee and others.
