Roskomnadzor announced that it will begin blocking Instagram from midnight on March 14. Thus, the agency gives an additional two days to users to transfer materials to other social networks.
Since Instagram’s active users will need time to transfer their photos and videos to other social networks, notify their contacts and subscribers, Roskomnadzor decided to complete the procedure for imposing restrictions on access to Instagram at 00 o’clock on March 14, providing for an additional 48 hours of transition period for users.
On March 11, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation demanded that Meta be recognized as an “extremist organization”. Facebook Instagram and threats and calls for violence against the Russian military have been removed in some countries, Meta changed its moderation policy on the eve of the event.
The submission of the Prosecutor General’s Office to Roskomnadzor about the blocking of Instagram (the social network is owned by Meta) does not affect the WhatsApp messenger, said Alexander Khinshtein, head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications.
