A nuclear war could be unleashed due to an accident, former IAEA inspector, Doctor of Physical Sciences Pantelis Ikonomou warned, RIA Novosti reports.

The specialist worked at the IAEA for 33 years, he held the position of inspector for nuclear nonproliferation, and also acted as an expert on combating nuclear terrorism. According to him, it is unlikely that someone will push the nuclear button, since everyone is aware of the danger of starting such a war.

“The danger of a nuclear war can occur due to an accident or due to uncontrolled outside interference, such as a cyber attack, or due to human error,” Ikonomu said.

The expert also drew attention to the fact that modern nuclear power plants can be 10 or even 100 times more dangerous and more powerful than the explosion over Japanese Hiroshima. “The leaders of the nuclear countries must sign an agreement to guarantee the non-use of nuclear weapons,” he concluded.
