President Joe Biden issued an urgent warning to American business leaders on Monday, advising them to immediately strengthen their companies’ cyber defenses.
Speaking at a quarterly round table meeting with businessmen in Washington, Biden said that Russian President Vladimir Putin is likely to use cyber attacks as a form of retaliation against the United States for their actions to counter Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Biden said: “one of the tools that, in my opinion — in our opinion, Putin is most likely to use — is cyberattacks. He hasn’t used them yet, but it’s part of his script».
The President told business leaders that national interests were at stake, suggesting that “it is your responsibility to do everything possible to combat cyber attacks.”
Earlier on Monday, Biden issued a statement, citing intelligence that Russia may conduct malicious cyber activity against American companies and critical infrastructure.
Deputy National Security Adviser Ann Neuberger said at a White House briefing on Monday that Russia is conducting “preparatory measures” for cyber attacks, which, she said, could include scanning websites and searching for vulnerabilities in software. She stressed that Washington will respond to cyber attacks if Moscow’s involvement in them is established.
Putin previously called the accusations against Moscow in cyber attacks on American companies ridiculous and ridiculous.
